I was recently stung with a parking fine for not parking parallel to the road. I was slightly askew from the road because I thought it would give more room for other people to park.
Where I parked, there was no signage indicating parallel parking. And the side of the road itself was eroded so if ever there were parking lines, they are long gone (so I was actually parking on dirt.).
My question is, is there a rule which says that I should always assume parallel parking is required unless indicated otherwise? If not, I will challenge the ticket.
Thanks.

Yes it is parallel parking unless otherwise indicated - and then its nose in parking unless otherwise indicated. Would you park like that outside your house? Of course not.
It's best to just play it safe. If you feel like you could be fined, drive the extra block. This has saved me a lot of money over the years. http://www.omb.com.au/conveyancing.html
