I live in Kenosha, WI, which is right between Milwaukee and Chicago. I bought this antenna http://www.antennasdirect.com/store/DB4_HDTV_anten... . We already have a Samsung HDTV that gets some channels, not all in HD. I am wondering which is the best way of hooking it up. Things such as, do I need a pre-amp, how do I receive the channels I get without the antenna and the ones I get with the antenna, should I just point it north, etc. We have Time Warner broadband internet, therefore, there is a cable coming into the house from that. Any advice would be helpful.
Update:Ok, some of that stuff was over my head a little. I guess another Question is, the TV we have already receives a fair amount of channels, however, when this antenna is hooked up, it does not receive some of the channels that the tv was already picking up. For example, no antenna, tv picks up 12-1 (milwaukee abc hd), however when antenna is hooked up, it does not pick that up. How do I make sure it still does?

If it doesn't have an optical input, it likely isn't a proper digital surround receiver. If it is an older analog surround receiver, there is little point using it. If it simply lacks optical in but has coaxial digital that supports Dolby Digital, you can use an optical to coaxial converter. Otherwise I would look into upgrading to a modern surround receiver that has at least optical in.
