I bought my sons a compaq presario SR1720nx desktop about 4 years ago . My son told me he was having major issues with the computer and that it was, running slowly and that it was very annoying . I took the pc and connected it last night and what would normally take me 5 minutes to do took almost 2 hours with the severe lagging issues on it. I noticed he had alot of spyware removal and useless junk in it.
Quite a few times , I've taken my own personal computer , and laptop and reinstalled windows, once that was done the entire system was perfect. I would like to do it with this pc , but would like to know what do I need, what cd do I need in order to reinstall the windows xp home edition, and how do to it on this particular pc. or should I just go to the computer store around the corner and leave it up to him, if I do, then how much should they charge more or less?
p.s. whatever is in the pc is just garbage, we just want to wipe the memory clean and start over , and this time no more useless downloads for spyware etc...etc..

Hi, mzrubia
there's two way to solve the problem.
1.If you wanna restore the original system(Windows XP Home Edition), you should create the restore at first, may be you've already created the restore, if you did, it's great, use it to restore your OS. if you didn't, find the "HP PC Recovery Tools" in your Start Menu, if you don't have it, download from the following url:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloa...
or search on compaq web site, type "SR1720NX" for Product in Support area. check the "HP PC Recovery Tools CD Update", download and install it
no matter how long your computer you've used, it will create two restore CD(DVD)s for you to restore the OS, there's one condition that you never repartition the HDD, that means you don't the delete the Compaq hidden partition. then backup all the necessary files, cause the restore will delete all the files in your HDD. But when you create the restore CD(DVD), it may burn the virus into you CD(DVD) as well, so i don't recommend you to create the restore CD(DVD) right now.
2.If you have the Windows XP Compaq OEM Disc, it will be great to reinstall a brand new OS without the other apps and drivers, after then, you can download the drivers from Compaq or HP web site and install them.
I think your computer is not appropriate to install Vista or Win 7, "Windows XP Professional Editon with SP3 HP(Compaq) OEM" is best for your computer.

You will have to buy a new Operating System Disc, XP, VISTA, Windows 7.
It will cost you from 80$ for the XP up to over 300$ for windows 7 ultimate. But it is well worth it as you can reinstall or fix windows whenever their is a problem. Yeah you should have a recovery disc, but I doubt it. If you want to keep any valuable files, just take out the hard drive and hook it up to another computer and burn them to a dvdr disc.
Also get a good anti-virus program, use Mozilla Firefox as a web browser instead of Internet explorer and maybe get a registery cleaner in the future. And always defragment and scan for viruses every week or so.
lol...that happens to me to. anyway, if you do take it, a good price is 50 -90 dollars. higher is a rip off. all you need is the cd that says windows xp. pop it into the disk tray and restart your computer. when you turn it on, the screen will be black and it will say load disk or whatever. push any button then it will load the files. you will see your c drive so just select that. after that push format using ntfs (quick format) then it will wipe your hard drive clean. now the files will install and your computer will restart with a windows xp screen. that means its installing xp so just let it do its thing. once its done, you have your computer completely restored, no viruses, Trojan's, etc...
he should of made a recovery disk. Now if you press a button on the keyboard f8 or f10 check manual you might can install from there because you might have an image of the OS on your hard drive now maybe! Always always make a recovery disk alwaya always always
