I have gone into the System Properties window and on the lower half of the window there is a Remote Desktop section. However, the options are all grayed out. It does not allow me to even make a selection. This is the part that is preventing my progress. This is a home computer in a workgroup, and I am the only person who uses this computer and am thus the admin.

It is a little confusing that you say you are trying to enable Remote Desktop "on a remote computer". Remote Desktop first has to be enabled on/from the computer you are going to connect "to". The client computer that you are connecting "from" can be any Windows version (even Home versions), but the computer that you connect remote desktop "to" has to be a Pro or other business or server version.

This option is only available for Enterprise and Pro editions of Windows. If you have a Home version, this cannot be done.
Ask the owner to do it for you.
