I have lost the fob but still have a spare key. Is there anyway to disarm the system so that I can start the car? I am a collage student and paying to have it towed to a dealership and reprogram a fob would be hundreds of dollars. Could Hyundai really have made this system so poorly.....?

put the key in the drivers door and try to lock and unlock the door. That work with most.
I don't agree with all the Hyundai bashers on here but in answer to your question: Even though Elantras with a stick run surprisingly well, It is unlikely you will outrun a 2.5 Altima in a 2.0 (Beta) Elantra because of the 30+ horsepower difference even with the added weight in the NIssan. The 2.5 in the Altima is making about 170hp and although CVTs are garnering some bad press in other cars because of ratio change 'latency', this is not the case in the Altima. You put your foot on the gas in the Nissan and it's CVT will whip the engine into it's power band very quickly. The last two cars I've driven with CVTs were a Dodge Caliber and a Nissan Sentra.. The Dodge CVT took WAY too long to change ratios and get the rpms up. The Sentra on the other hand just flat spun right up to redline and took off in a fashion belying it's 2 liter engine. Hyundais are actually VERY good cars (latter years) and I have owned one. The only reason I would not buy a Hyundai currently is because I don't buy cars with timing belts anymore, ESPECIALLY V6s. (Too many good options out their with chained engines) The only engine Hyundai puts a chain in for the cam(s) is the newest 3.8 liter. All other Hyundai engines including the 2.7 and 3.3 V6 have belts and cost disproportionately too much to replace. Timing belts should NOT be a "maintenance" item. Hopefully Hyundai will see this post because I am a huge fan of their cars but they need to get with the times concerning timing chains. Heck, Toyota even puts a chain on it's lowly 1.5 liter used in the Yaris. Also, Chevy chains all their fours and sixes except the four they use in the Aveo. Hope this helps.
with a grenade. If you don't have one of those you could remove the battery then pull the wire.
