It is possible to do it that way as the quality of the better videocams is quite decent.
You'll have to become quite adept at holding it still, no leaving it on and panning around the ground and other such fun things. So just a matter of using things like tripods etc and good lighting and a decent sound recording.
It may take you a few times to get it the way they might want it to look and feel, but have fun with it.

it's not going to stand up to what pbs uses normally, especially since pbs is hdtv
