Obviously the english language isn't the native tongue, I just wondered if English was widely spoken in Portugal? (eg - if you were visiting the country would you be able to happily go about day to day life and be understood or would it be extremely difficult unless you knew how to speak portugeuse?

Widely spoken no, but spoken. In main cities like Lisbon or Porto most stores can speak some english but in rural villages or to the interior is less common. In the Algarve area you can find plently of english speaking people on the streets, but apart from that area even in major cities if you want some street information or any tip ask younger people or students (most of them will know a bit of English).
Get one of those phrase books english portuguese and you will get by even in smaller villages. Everyone is very friendly and will do their best to speak to you!
in case you advise interior of sight audio device, then there's a nicely possibility the main widely spoken language is Turkish. although there are some transformations, Turkish is spoken and on the comparable time understood in East Turkmenistan (Sinkiang, China), Kirghistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Northern Afghanistan, components of Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, components of Bulgaria, Northern Cyprus, components of Russia. I even have experienced a Turk being waiting to chat with an Uighur from Sinkiang and that i've got additionally experienced chinese language from unique components being decreased to writing to a minimum of one yet another in view that they'd not understand each and every diverse's spoken language.
