Over my time learning japanese I've noticed something odd. My laptop uses り for ri but my ipod uses something different. The ipod version was one I also saw in a subtitle joke in the tv show "Rob!" I can't show it but it's basically a vertical line with a clockwise curve on the right side. Is it a newer or older form of righting "ri" or is it just alternate? Is it used in certain words like how kanji works? Thank you.

It could be the font, or it could be the katakan ri.
