our dog toby is roughly 10 years old, and seems to be occasionally hacking or coughing, and as we dont want to go the vet incase of him being put down or the costs being too much :/ does he have kennel cough and if so what should we do??
That is beyond ridiculous! No vet is going to put a dog down because its coughing, no matter the reason for the coughing.
If you think it costs too much, too bad. When you CHOSE to have a dog, you assumed responsibility for providing vet care.
You take this dog to the vet ASAP and get that cough treated instead of just sitting there watching him get worse and worse. If you won't do that, you surrender this dog to a shelter so he does get the vet care he needs.
There are many low cost clinics these days, as well as the 'Care Credit' card for medical not only for you but also your dog. I would take Toby in and have him checked out. I wouldn't worry about him being put down if the cough is the only issue, they'll just give you something to help with it. No Vet that I know if is going to put your dog down without your permission. They have to have you sign permission papers to do it. Your dog may have something caught in his throat, he may have an abrasion, or he may have Kennel Cough, there is no way for anyone here to really answer this for you unfortunately. Good luck, hope Toby feels better soon.
Last spring my dog started coughing at bedtime. He woke me up at 5:00am was was coughing really bad. I got dressed and took him to pet emergency and sure enough it was Kennel cough which spreads. So I had to give both dogs the medication so my other dog would not get it (she did not). It can be serious. Take him to the vet and see if it is kennel cough.
if the cough is all the time mostley none stop all day long its kennel cough and you get medicine through a vet. they dont put the dog down.
if the cough is once in a while, it is allergies, mine coughs and hacks off and on through the day and we found out that he was allergic to the carpet and dust. the vet had to put him on clarition and when he takes it. the dog is fine, if i forget to give it to him then he starts coughing. and a vet visit varies but when i had my dog to the vet his vist cost me 80.00 that includes the office call and the exam and the allergy meds are over the counter for 23.00 thats with tax.

If it's kennel cough, it is cheap to fix, and if you don't the dog will get pneumonia and will die
It could also be heart related. If you can't take a sick dog to the vet, give him to some one who can.
