I have no idea what i did but my mac will not load to the desktop, i have very important things on there i have pictures on there from years ago and most of all i have my school work from college. what do you think is wrong with it, or better yet where or what way is the best way to fix it? i heard best buy can fix it, but can they store all my data so it won't be erased? thanks so much!

Maybe it's your startup items that are creating the problem or it can't find the startup disk.
You can try a reboot while holding down the Shift key until you get to the login page, sign in hold down the Shift key again and hit Enter until it fully loads Finder. Go to System Preferences > Accounts > your account > Login Items and delete them all. Reboot and see if you can get to the Desktop normally.
You can also reboot in Single User mode to run fsck -y.

Edit: Re-installing Mac OS X is a last resort and most if not all problems can be fixed using the troubleshooting tips.
back-up yr hard drive thru terminal
re-install mac osx
mac is actually FreeBSD with fancy aqua interface built on top of it so you can do anything thru terminal
Mac is safe buddy - don't worry you won't loose anything
Take it to your nearest Apple Store and get them to have a look at it.
