Interesting question. In reflection, maybe there is a under-true statement to this. Many people who are either musicians or just fans value the beliefs of the artists, their political view's, their moral stance on issues, but as with any industry or community, people are controlled. The bands/artists strive to create a better album, whether for personal gain or that dictated by the management or record company. Therefore in the process, the fans buy the albums, spend money on seeing the band perform. From stadium or a local small venue, we pay to see them. Its all consumerism and profit. In regards to being de-politicised, I agree totally. However, I would not solely blame the artist, they are influence and governed b the management, sales etc etc. Very few bands stand their ground, refuse to bow down to the pressures of sales, or take to the streets and play free festivals anymore. I pay to see bands, comply with the non-pass-out policies, plastic glasses, barriers in front of the stage so no stage diving etc. But yet my heart holds strong to the words the bands sing about........ except its passive. No action. I now question myself, what has happened to me, what has happened to the bands. Where are my beliefs and values that were re-inforced by music ? I am now aprt of the sytem that I despised, it now controls all that I thought of that should be free........ the right of exprsssion and free speech.
