My family is thinking of going to Mexico in Oct(heard its a great time-low peak season). Where in Mexico should we go that the kids will have fun, Example.. swimming with the dolphins, snorkeling, water parks? Also were debating staying at a villa or All inclusive resort, what do you prefer?

Any of those would work, though I tend to avoid Riviera Maya resorts because there's too many mediocre all-inclusive resorts and most of them are a pain in the tookus as far as actually getting out and seeing things (but that's my viewpoint from somebody who likes the convenience of being in Cancun or Playa del Carmen and who has no worries about using buses or renting cars).
If you really want it all, your best bet will be Cancun: that's where the biggest tourist infrastructure is centered and its easiest to arrange everything from there.
Have fun!
Jim is right. The reason it is low-season is because of the risk of a hurricane. The later in October you go, the less chance of a hurricane. That said, you can have lovely weather in October. If you want guaranteed sunshine go in Feb or March.
To your question about where to stay. I believe Playa del Carmen (part of the Riviera Maya) is the most central. There is one very large eco water park in Playa called Xcaret (see link). There is a lot for the kids to do there. Dolphins, zipline, floating in the underground river, snorkeling, a zoo, butterfly sanctuary, etc. There is also a ferry from Playa to Cozumel. That is a fun day trip for snorkeling and just scouting around the island.
If you like ruins, Tulum is just south of Playa and a great historical site right on the ocean.
I personally would stay in a condo or villa with kids. That way you can have stuff available in the fridge all the time and it's what the kids like (or you want them to have). There are several large grocery stores in town, Walmart among them.
Hope you have fun!!
October is a great time to visit Mexico. The weather is warm, and as you said the crowds are low. One resort in Cancun that I absolutely love is Dreams Cancun. The resort is a beautiful all-inclusive located in the hotel zone in Cancun. One of the best things about the resort besides the outstanding service they provide, is that it has a dolphin aquarium on site! This means that you can swim with dolphins right at the resort and catch a dolphin performance right from your room. The resort also has other activities like tennis, snorkeling, a spa, windsurfing, hobie cats and kayaks. If you are interested in any excursions, the resort has a tour desk that can help you book some in the area.
I loved the pools at Dreams because they have a wait staff and swim-up bar. The food and drinks are great at any of the five restaurant and five bars or you can enjoy a night in with 24-hour room service. I hope you enjoy your vacation!
There are soooo many. You will get several answers on this so I will give you my opinion of October in the Yucatan.
It is the rainy season although unless you get hit with a hurricane should not ruin your holiday. Be sure you buy cancelation insurance and keep an eye on the forecast.
See link and the chaos and destruction that Hurricane WILMA inflicted on the Yucatan Oct 19 2005
the riviera is all the way long between cancun and playa, so it depends on where in the riviera u r located, from down town cancun 2 playa ull do a bit more of 1 hr....... all the beaches in the riviera r soft sandy :D
