My son wants to play Minecraft with me on two different computers (laptop with WIN 8 and desktop with WIN 7). I have Googled, Asked, Minecraftforummed, Youtubed, etc., but cannot get our two computers to connect. I don't want to set up a server on one computer -- too much work when a direct LAN connection is possible. And I *am* able to play both computers using one account at the same time.
I've read all kinds of things about being sure Port 25565 is open, but is that necessary when I'm playing on one LAN? I don't want to go to the hassle and headache of setting up a static IP to open the port when I don't think that's the issue.
I have been able to logon to an outside server before.
Both computers are on the same local network -- I can access shared files between the two.
Even though I'm using the same account, both are in offline mode, so I don't think that's the problem.
When WIN 8 computer is playing, WIN 7 can "see" the game on WIN 8 when it's opened to LAN when I click on multiplayer. However, when I select it, I get the dreaded "Connection timed out" error.
Connecting two computers on one LAN shouldn't be this difficult. Any suggestions?

There are a few things that could be preventing you from connecting via a LAN connection.
1) If you are running your LAN connection through your Linksys or Airport Extreme wireless router, make sure that it has the correct port forwarding (tutorial found here: http://portforward.com/ )
2) Make sure that your antivirus(if you run one) is set to allow traffic BOTH ways on port 25565.
*The hardest is Eset Cyber Security which requires that you set the program's personal firewall to interactive mode on the server-running computer and then connect to the server from an outside computer's Minecraft. Eset will then ask you if you want to let traffic OUT, check the (Always allow) box and hit yes. Repeat the process for the INBOUND traffic.
Lastly, make sure that you actually hit the start LAN server button.
both open minecraft and one person creates a world and click esc and click open to lan and click ok and the other person should go into multiplayer and it should be there, good luck :)
