I am able to log in my password, windows xp loads up, the welcome screen appears with my programs that I have on the desktop. Then it freezes up. I can't open any programs, can't even go to the start menu to shut the computer down properly. I tried to log on in the "safe mode" but that screen is frozen to. Can someone please please help me. I tried to do a virus scan before getting this problem.

How old is the computer and what was the hard drive space? It might be XP, it can wear out, I'm not experienced in this but maybe, if you have one, put in a system restore CD into your computer.
Most likely you have installed a wrong driver, Program or an update has gone wrong.
when booting press the F8 Key and go into Safe Mode but select Ms dos or last good know configurations,if you can get into the MS Dos Mode press the alt ctrl+delete key to get the task Manager and then do a system restore to a time just before this problem happened.
In most cases, if your PC is freezing up, or running slow, it's due to errors in your registry. Your PC's system registry holds all kinds of info about your computer. Over time the invalid entries in your registry begin to affect your PC's performance, causing it to freeze up or run much slower. PC owners should have there registry scanned every few months for maximum performance. You can download a registry cleaner to fix the problem!
