just to let those who answered my first question know..
The vet has been and confirmed the problem was an abscess. It burst through the coronary band this morning just before the vet arrived. The vet dug a second hole through the hoof to allow drainage. Treatment now is a few good soaks with epsom salts and poulticing, within a couple of days she should be fine and back with her budddies in the field.

if there are any rocks that are kicked up through the dirt it is very possible that it had gotten stuck in the hoof and caused it to crack. Or it could have been to long since the farrier had been there and trimmed or he did not stop a crack in the hoof and follow up on it. The same happened to me about a month ago. The crack rises into the coronary band and can infect it and cause it to swell. If the foot is not properly soaked then the hoof can get worse and the vet may have to have an acrylic hoof set for her.
If you have a boot to put on her foot, it will help a lot. A boot like this:

They keep the wound from getting any worse and keep it clean and protected. And they make your job of cleaning the foot much much easier.
