T2i is better than D5000. It's got 6 more megapixels (but same image quality), slightly better noise performance, better LCD screen (but not articulating) and better video features. It's also more expensive..So if you're considering the D5000 cause of price, then get the D3100 which is much better at same price.
Good choices both. Consumer reports does rank the Canon higher with better picture quality in addition to higher Megapixel (15.1 to 12.2 ) and lighter body (27.7 to 32.6) and better flash unit. However, that is not to say that the Nikon is not a great camera either. Even Consumer reports chose the Nikon as a "best buy" and the Canon as "recommended". But seeing as the price is almost identical, I would go for the Canon. I've handled both Nikon's and Canon's and Canon SLR's are just more intuitive than Nikon cameras. Either way, you can't lose.
