An Alaskan rescue plane traveling 47m/s drops a package of emergency rations from a height of 179 m to a stranded party of explorers. The acceleration of gravity of 9.8 m/s^2. What is the vertical component of the velocity just before it hits? ( choose upward as the positive vertical direction) Answer in units of m/s. Please explain how you found your answer. thanks :)

The only number that matters is the 179 m
v = √(2gh) = √(2•9.8•179) = 59.2 m/s
for the convention you state, that is –59.2 m/s
