I was trying to start up my PC yesterday and after the initial Dell screen, it just went black. Nothing happened. I assumed there was something wrong with my HD or something, so I put in the WinXP cd to install/recover an already installed version of XP. Now, when I start the PC, it takes me to the Windows welcome screen, I type my password to log on, and it starts logging on. The only thing I get, however, is my background picture, and nothing else, no icons, no explorer, nothing, and then it eventually stops loading and doesn't progress. Does anyone know what I can do to get back in? All help much appreciated!! Thanks in advance.
Update:Also, forgot to say that I get a screen when I log on that says 'to log on you will need to register this version of XP', and I choose 'yes' but there is nothing more happening.

there could be many reasons why it's doing that but i would start with the monitor. it could be it's broken so before doing anything else, if you have access to another monitor or have someone that will let you use theirs, connect theirs to your computer, if it works then you have to buy a new monitor, if it doesn't it's most likely a problem within the computer itself
The first answer is correct then after you push r a command promp will come up and ask you to select OS push 1 then push enter type in DSKCHK then push enter that is how you repair it without losing any files.
i guess you use r for repair when reinstalling windows you might have to do a clean install
