I purchased an external HDD case and it has an option to use a power source. My question is that the unit wants a DC 5v +/- 5%, 500mA. So, I have a power source that is DC 4.5v, 400mA. I know that it would under-power the unit, but would it damage the unit in any way using a power source that low?
The manual just says not to use anything ABOVE 5v.

Probably not but don't expect the power brick to last long considering it's under volt and lower current rating. I dam sure wouldn't use it unattended as it WILL fry
Edit: It will NOT harm the device dimwits.
It might make it unstable under load and this could lead to serious data corruption. I have known lack of power to cause voltage spikes which can physically damage a drive though.
5V is essential, however Current is not, you can use any current 500mA or above.
4.75v-5.25v and 500mA is what you need and you are wanting to undervolt and under-amp....not going to work. You may screw up the enclosure as well.
