I've been wanting one of these dogs for a while now. I love the way they look. I will get one (hopefully) when my beloved German Shepherd... passes on (not looking forward to that).
I've been wondering about their temperament. Are they usually nice, if raised in a good home?
I've owned several german shepherds in my life time (I have one right now, as I said earlier), and I also have 3 rottweilers (some people are scared of them, but rottweilers are big teddy bears if you ask me).
So anyway, do they make good pets? My gut tells me that they, like rotties and German shepherds, are a misunderstood breed that gets too much bad press.
And how does their intelligence compare to german shepherds and rottweilers?
Also, what do you think a good name would be for a Presa Canario? I think "Bane" would be a good name.
thanks!
Update:I'd also like to say that I do not plan on breeding presa canarios or any other kind of dog. Don't know if that matters or not, but I thought I'd mention it.
I have a lot of experience with big dogs and they don't intimidate me, if that helps.

I'm not sure if I'd name a Presa of all breeds, Bane, because of a Presa by exactly that name that was involved in a fatal attack on a human a few years back.
They are guarding mastiffs rather than pure working breeds like the GSD and Rottweiler, so they will probably have quite a different, more laid-back temperament. They are often described as calm and almost lazy, but are dominant and with a much stronger guard instinct than GSDs or Rottweilers.
I have a Presa Canario & I named him Bane, And he's about the best dog I'v ever had. It's just a name. I too have a German Shepherd And they both get along great! Just make sure when you pick out you're Presa puppy, you pick out one that has the same level of energy or lower as you're other dogs. Though there are many breeders out there, I did get mine from this kennel- Presatx.com This is My Presa Canario-Bane-at 7 months old.

Great dog or at least mine is. There are some draw backs. They are ridiculously strong and because they are dogs they sometimes do what dogs do and want to run off and there really is no stoping him. The up side is he is very careful around small kids and I think likes all the abuse a two year old can give. I trust him more then just about any pet I have had and more then most people. So just train them well as a pup because I could see them being a real handful trying to train when grown just because they are so strong. Even on large dog scale they are ridiculously strong dogs. That said great buddy and family dog just don't play tug of war. Lol

Make sure you do lots of research on these dogs and find a really good breeder, don't cut any corners. They can make good pets but you have to be vigilant. Without good breeding and proper handling these dogs can be absolutely be deadly. You obviously have dog experience but don't expect this to be like your German Shepherds. I actually do like the name Bane and it seems very appropriate for this breed.
