If you have a rather unique hobby or activity that you do you could try and incorporate that into your shoot somehow. They probably won't have pre-set poses for something like that, so you'd get to work with them more and have unique poses that others wouldn't have.
If you don't have anything really different that you do, then take something average like music or movies you like or something and pose with them? Like, have a stack of DVDs and stuff to lean on or something like that.
I know exactly what you mean!! It seems like every year, you have the same photo studios posing everyone by the same rusty truck... and it looks so boring!!! I always take my seniors to unique locations. Find an abandoned building or a wall with lots of graffiti. Ask a mechanic or used tire sales person to take pictures inside or on top of their tires or in their garage. Stop by your local court house or capitol - these buildings typically have marble floors and/or pillars which can make for great photo opportunities. If you live in the middle of nowhere, stop by the laundromat and take a picture inside a dryer (at your own risk).
I'm sure there's TONS of places to go... but it's not your job to think of them!! Make sure you tell your photographer that you want original pictures. Just remember, with most photographers, these extra creative locations may come with a price tag :( I always encourage my clients to look on other photographer's websites. If your photographer knows what they're doing, they should be able to re-create a picture with little effort.
I attached the link to my business' facebook page... maybe this will help with more ideas...
All the best with your photo endeavor!!
