The least expensive new DSLRs are the Nikon D3100 and Rebel T3.
YOU need to go to a local camera shop and find out which one feels more comfortable to hold.
Regardless of which camera you buy, you'll also need a genuine spare battery, 2 or 3 8GB Class 10 SDHC cards, a card reader, a case and several basic photography books. Photography isn't a cheap hobby.
If you don't want to spend big bucks on a DSLR, the P510 is a good choice.
Hmm, i wouldn`t advise you to buy coolpix p510 .. in fact it`s not even dslr..
As taylor said - cheapest and best entry level dslr camera for amateurs ir nikon d3100 ..
Look some rewievs .. videos, testing .. It`s honestly really good camera, with lot of functions that professional dslr camre has ..
Of course it doesn`t have mic jack .. that means if you want good video sound you`ll have to use mic that`s not connected wioth camera and afterwards put video footage together with sound clip .. It`s easy ;) ...
So - nikon d3100 it is .. can`t really think of anything else that is this good at this price rate ..
I recommend any camera in the Canon Rebel line but they start at $500. You're not going to find any current dslr models at that price. And, as you've read above, a Coolpix is not a dslr camera, it's a point and shoot

The P510 is not a DSLR; it's a P&S bridge camera.
