My husband and I are going on a 12 day cruise. On the formal nights, can my husband get away with wearing Dockers dressy pants and a button down shirt ? I can't see packing a suit or a jacket or less a tuxedo. How many formal nights are on a 12 day cruise anyway ?

I cruise Royal Caribbean regularly and can tell you that what you have described is perfectly acceptable both for regular evenings and the formal nights. The attire for formal nights is REQUESTED, not required and while most passengers do dress up there are many who do not and men certainly do not put on a suit or jacket and tie for formal nights. I have worn a Hawaiian shirt on formal nights and also a pullover sweater shirt. The only way you/he would be denied access to the main dining room is if you were dressed in shorts and had on a "T" shirt.
IN addition, you can always eat in the Windjammer buffet if you don't want to dress up. The attire there is always casual, shorts and even swim wear that is covered, sneakers, flip flops and sandals, all OK.
A 12 night cruise will have three (3) formal nights; just did a 12 night cruise in Nov, 2009.
Dockers and a button-down shirt are "business casual" attire and are appropriate for non-formal nights on a ship. He should have at least a jacket and a tie for formal nights. A 12-day cruise will probably have 3 of them (I know 7-day cruises have 2).
If you don't want to pack dressy clothes, every Royal Caribbean ship has a buffet restaurant (the Windjammer) which is included in the cruise fare and does not request formal wear on formal nights; you could eat there instead.
A 12-night cruise should have 2/3 formal nights. Dockers and button down shirt are good for casual nights. A jacket is expected at the formal night dinners. I doubt they deny you access to the restaurant. Just be dressed nice. Wearing a tie would be nice.
Hope I helped!
I've just returned from a 12 day Royal Caribbean cruise. There were 3 formal nights. Although I was told that formal wear was only suggested, I do feel that you can feel out of place if you don't dress up. If you don't mind that feeling, you will not be denied entry into the dining room.
I myself got dressed up one night, and the other 2 nights I went to the buffet. There were many people there, and the food was excellent.
Don't worry about the clothes. Take what you're comfortable in, and enjoy yourself.
