I prefer solitaires to a ring with side stones. I think that if you have a nice solitaire then you don't need side stones to detract from the beauty....but that's just my opinion.
I like the look better with side stones. On my hand, which is small, a solitaire didn't look right. My husband chose a solitaire with side stones, and the matching wedding band has three of the smaller stones - so it's a lovely set.
I prefer side stones.. makes the ring sparkle. However, if you go with a solitaire style ring you can always buy an enhancement wrap for a wedding band. These wraps make solitaires look beautiful. I guess it's all a matter of personal taste.
Depends on your style of course- do you wear other rings on either hand? What are those like? Will they overpower a solitaire? What other jewelry do you have - bracelets, necklaces. You should do something that is just a bit more outspoken than the other jewelry you wear. Get what makes sense- and what will make you smile each time you look at it. You want to look well put together, not like you are trying too hard. I've seen people who look like they should have a few more stones on their ring- because of the other jewelry they wear, and people who should have just a solitaire which is just as- if not more- elegant.
I personally don't like three-stone rings that are all diamonds, but I do love the look of side gem-stones (my engagement ring is a three-stone ring with a diamond and side pink sapphires).
Solitaires are nice, but I guess they are just so simple for my taste, there is nothing unique looking about them (for me, personally). I do love the look of rings with the tiny pave style diamonds though. Some of the designs are so intricate and antique looking. Some can be gaudy, but some are so ornate and beautiful.
Side stones on the band part are gorgeous. I absolutely love mine. I think the side stones to the front and back of the diamond (where they would meet the wedding band) are pretty but shouldn't be used on engagement rings because it makes it harder to get a wedding band to fit smoothly with it.
I like the solitaire better b/c I don't like other stones detracting from the main one. Also, I find the pave's (tiny encrusted diamonds) cause my neighboring fingers to itch when the ring gets partially turned around.
