Must be old to come with 128 Mb of Ram. You have to find how much memory your computer can handle. If it is 512 Mb then putting in a 1Gb will not make it faster or better , but just a waste of money too. All computer have a max memory that they can use.
Set your defrag to auto, so that at 2am in the morning it can defrag your computer every day.
You need to go to pcworld.com and see the info they have on HD. The Hard Drive info they have will help you into what to get.
If in the US, look at the Sunday paper for good computer deals too.
1Gb of memory will run $100 and the 250 Gb HD about $110. But for about $100 more you can get a new computer, and then for about $500 you can buy a basic dual core computer if you work with graphics.
1) Only load the required services. Uncheck the services that you dont want to run by going to msconfig (type msconfig in Run and u will get the window)
2) Install a less memory hogging antivirus (maybe like AVG).
3) Defragment your drive and keep at least 15% free space.
There are various other settings that can be tweaked. See the sources that i am supplying
You may be able to increase your memory. Go to www.crucial.com and run their memory scan tool. It will tell you what you could put in your machine. For an overview of performance go to www.pcpitstop.com and run their full diagnostic tests. It is a great tool to tell you what areas you can upgrade on your computer. The biggest factor to speed is the processor - which may or may not be upgradeable. There is another good system anylizer at www.belarc.com
i say go to www.dell.com or www.hp.com or even www.apple.com to buy a new HP. at dell and HP you could get one for about 400 bucks now. it's cheaper than buying the ram and a hard drive. the 512mb would cost anywhere from 29.99 to 99.99 depending what kind is it. one of the oldest is a PC100 but i believe your PC is even older than that. an external 100gb hard drive would cost you about 250-300 bucks. So you'll be paying a min. of 300 bucks to fix your old sorry computer. But yea, it's worth it to buy a new one from dell or something. good luck.
get more ram for sure. if you're running high end graphics and stuff, get at least 512 but recommend 1 gig. a larger hd would help too.
I think there must have some regsitry errors and spyware in you PC to slow it down.
You need to try a registry cleaner to clean you PC.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer you create junk in the registry. You need to scan and clean your PC with registry cleaner. It is a powerful and useful tool to elinimate to the clutter and junk that builds up in your PC's registry from installing and removing programs, creating and deleting files and surfing online.Without regular system tune–ups, it's very likely your computer will slow, crash, full of error messages, leaving you with a costly computer–mechanic bill and lost data.
There are some comparison and review of registry cleaners

You can download and scan your PC for free.
It is not worth investing in any new parts for that computer. If you do decide to upgrade newegg has the best prices.
dont forget to do basic maintenance too defrag etc empty temp memory
