Hi I'm looking into special effects makeupndesign colleges for my daughter, and I was wondering if you could give me some good colleges and programs I could look into? What's the application process like, just submitting a portfolio or what?
She's interested specifically in working in the Theatre, with a possible minor in Acting or Music. Any programs that offer this would be great,

Understand that most conventional media makeup artists will be expected to cover basic casualty/illness effects using makeup but the more extreme/prosthetic makeup is a separate field. The more involved you become with the process involved in creating prosthetic makeup (which are not evident in the final result) the less you tend to do standard lipstick and powder stuff.
That is not to say that crossing over is not possible - people do - but just as an experienced carpenter doesn't do electrical work nearly as well as an experienced electrician, usually people tend to gravitate towards one or the other and exposure to all of it is important to make up your mind.
Like I said, there is so much that is involved in making appliances and effects which you can't see in the finished makeup - you have to love the processes which means getting messy, working with smelly chemicals and making a mess.
The article I wrote on different kinds of work in makeup effects may also help:

Hope this helps
