Nobody goes by the Bible alone and most Protestants( that I know) of the varied almost uncountable divisions emphasized a line here and a passage there of the Bible
Methodists interpret the Bible by Wesleyan Traditon , Lutherans by Lutheran Tradition, AoG by Pentecostal Holiness Tradition, etc
Jesus taught salvation(in His Judgement Parables, for instance) that faith alone does not save
Check out the Joint Declaration On Justification( of Catholics, Lutherans and Methodists)
St Paul< the Apostle of Faith, taught that faith without love cannot save(1 Cor 13)
The only place where "faith alone" is in the Bible is in the verse you quoted and FA is condemned!
A believer that have true faith do works naturally, they come from the inside, from the Holy Spirit that lives within us who inspire us to bless others with our love, resources, prayers, hands, etc.
What James is doing is questioning the faith of a so called believer that says that he has faith but is not moved to love others / do works in favor of others. For James is impossible for a believer to say "I have faith" or "I love God", and at the same time say "I'm not moved to love others, to do works in favors of others". James state that the "faith" of that person is not true, is dead.
We protestants do works, but not to obtain salvation. We do works as a result of the love of God that is in our hearts.
Step1: Faith in Jesus comes first; and by that faith we obtain salvation (free of charge) from God;
Step 2: then works follows.
James is saying, if I do not see step 2 (works) I really doubt step 1 (faith) was completed.
That doesn't mean that faith alone won't save you. It means that believing, but not following God's commandments, is useless. Satan even believes in God, but he doesn't follow him. So what should set us apart is our works.
they ignore a lot of verses. i notice they don't stone each other for working on saturdays. and jesus told them women not to talk in church, because they are inferior to men.

Jas 2:17 Even so faith without works is dead.
Most of us don't ignore this. Only a few do. Usually the lazy ones.
Faith should produce good works. You can't have one without the other.

You show you're faith by your works. I don't see what this has to do with Protestants, most I know are working for the Lord all the time.

We do not "ignore" James 2:17. Faith should have works alongside it. But works by itself does not grant you eternal life.
Why do you ignore James 2:18?
18 But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
You need faith first, according to Scripture, in order to base the deeds off of.
I've often wondered the same myself. I have no logical answer to offer.
They don't want to leave their comfort zone ! Lets march into church and look good !
