It's seems to me that most self-identified libertarians are just republicans with a fancy name. They may be economic libertarians, but they seem very socially conservative. For example, if you are anti gay marriage, how are you then libertarian? These are just questions. I'm not trying to label all members of the party, I'm just going off my experiences with people I've spoken with.

No! They are like conservative and liberal and have ideas unlike Republicans. People like Ron Paul and Gary Johnson run as Republicans to get more people to vote for them.
Libertarian may have been around for some time but after the problems bush brought to the GOP many wanted to distance themselves as more independent but since most independents lean left the lib party was more pallatable.
The two parties are very similar. The libertarians are just like radical republicans. Here's how they differ: The want no government; the republicans want to reduce government control.
