When I turned on my sister's Dell Laptop, it showed up several choices if I would like to start in "Safe Mode," "Safe Mode with Networking," "Safe Mode with Command Prompt," and "Start Normally." I've tried all of the choices; but after the windows logo, the screen would remain black. I can see the pointer, however, and I can also move it around. Has the computer crashed?
I've browsed through other questions regarding this situation and found that most of the answers dealt with the problem in LCD backlight and some cable problem. If that's the case with my sister's laptop, what shoud I do? Is it even possible to replace the LCD screen on a laptop? If so, how much would that cost?
Thankx in advance.
Update:* The model is Dell Inspiron 6000.
* I have an AT&T Wireless Gateway. The computer is connected with an ethernet cable and the light lits up, but the computer doesn't appear in my network on my laptop.

Hi,
Since you say that the Window's logo is being displayed, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the display. There is a simple way to check this. Network the laptop to another computer using a crossover cable or through wi-fi. Check if the computer appears on the network. If it does, then the problem is most definitely the display as the OS would have booted fully.
If the computer does not appear on the network, then the prolem is with the OS. You may have to take the computer to a professional data-backup guy to have the data on the laptop backed up. You will have to re-install windows.

It sounds like Windows is failing to load correctly. Does the red led light - the hard drive light - flicker and show activity after the Window logo disappears? Both XP and Vista have repair facilities on their discs, and I suggest you try these.
It is most likely a sound file or driver not loading properly.
If you press F8 before windows starts you may get an option to use 'last now good configuration'; this might worth a try.
Just make sure that apart from your power and monitor connections their are no other external connections. Sometimes a modem can interfere with the startup process.
If you had seen the pointer of the mouse, then why not try to format your drive, just insert your installation disk.
Your computer could not go to your windows your system file has been corrupted. Have you any important file to recover if not then do this.
This is just an option since you plan to buy a screen and your payment to repair.
My suggestion would be to insert the restore disk that came with the computer to see if you can recover the system. Since you are seeing the Windows logo I would be surprised that it is the backlight.
haha ya a errors killer could paintings yet good luck instating it. you laptop substitute into attacked horribly through an epidemic and or a hacker. you elect expert help with putting off the memory and putting it yet another laptop and that must be it. i comprehend somebody that ought to do it for fantastically much loose yet i guess he's extremely a procedures away. or in case you have not something significant on your laptop in basic terms get a sparkling one... it sounds like an older kind besides.
if its showing you the safe mode options, then something is wrong with system. if you have the windows disk or a recovery disk, put in the disk then turn it on. if not take it to a local tech. it could be a bios setting too.
