Here's my problem: I recently started renting a room in someone's house, and I want to buy a firearm. It's a problem because my driver's license doesn't match my lease address (both CA, though), and I do not have any utilities in my name. So, is there any way for me to legally purchase a firearm without having two proofs of residency that show the same address?

Yes you can purchase a firearm (long gun) if you change the address on your driver's license or bring a copy of the online change of address request. Remember that when doing C of A online you must print the screen that has your DL# and new address. If you pass this screen you can't go back and you're screwed. Now for a handgun which it seems what you're trying to get you do need a 2nd form of ID but a rental agreement should work for that. Just have the person to whom you pay rent give you a copy of your rental agreement or if you don't have one you can get a generic form from Staples or a stationary store. Fill it out and make sure it has your name the landlords name and the address of the rented property. With these two documents you should have no problems.
no.
get your DL updated and obtain a C&R license.
its free to update your DL , the C&R is a government issued document stating your name and address, it costs$25 and lasts 3 years. with a C&R you are able to directly receive C&R firearms right to your door. In CA its also considered as proof of residence.
Quite simply: NO.
Your address on your ID needs to match where you live, not just for firearms purchases, but as a matter of law. Just get a new DL..... that and the lease agreement are all you need.
Gun stores that are clever have a DMV form right there where you request a DMV change of address. I had a similar problem when I moved from my apartment to my house, and at Turner's Outdoorsman in Encino, they just handed m a DMV change of address form then had for just that situation.
this doesnt answer your question but if you are looking to own a firearm, just move out of california all together.
