I'm about to upgrade soon, but there are some important files on this laptop that I really need. Here's my problem:
When I boot up it takes a really long time, then I'm unable to open any applications, but I can get the task manager up and looking at the processes running I don't see anything bad. Everything is very slow. I used to use this computer a ton for a lot of heavy stuff like video editing, do you think it's just gotten worn out? How do you suggest I get my files?

First of all, Windows Task Manager will not show the majority reason of computer's performance. When a computer slows down, there can be many reasons for it.

As for getting your files, put them on a flash drive if you plan on upgrading. They can still run on newer operating systems as long as you have the right software. If you are not going to upgrade, then give CCleaner a try.
