I'm about to upgrade soon, but there are some important files on this laptop that I really need. Here's my problem:
When I boot up it takes a really long time, then I'm unable to open any applications, but I can get the task manager up and looking at the processes running I don't see anything bad. Everything is very slow. I used to use this computer a ton for a lot of heavy stuff like video editing, do you think it's just gotten worn out? How do you suggest I get my files?

If you are pretty tech savy burn a linux live CD like Ubuntu. Boot onto the live CD which will give you access to all your files on the computer.
Drag and drop into an external hard drive and you are good to go.
Note: As long as you dont install Ubuntu then you are safe. Booting into a live CD means that the operating system (Ubuntu) is running from the CD and does not alter your Windows partition in any form.

Download and burn it to a CD.
Remove your hard drive and put it in an enclosure and connect it to your new computer. Then just get the files off the hard drive.
