Differential lock problems?

I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 2-wheel drive with a differential lock. I activated the differential lock and began to pull forward when I heard an audible crack or pop noise of metal. I turned off the differential lock and checked the undercarriage for any visible damage. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary so I got back in and drove off, but I noticed my differential lock is still engaged, even though the button is turned off. Could anyone tell me what exactly is wrong here and how to fix it, or if I need a professional to fix it and if so how much that would cost? Thanks in advance... =)

Update:

Also, I'm not looking for a perminant fix just yet, for now I'm only interested in getting the sucker disengaged so I can at least drive it.
