How do I get excel to format dates before 1900? For example 3 June 1876. ( It's not recognised as a date) It will format 1 January 1900 but not 31 December 1899 I also need to be able to sort them into date order. Can anyone help.

Unfortunately it's impossible. Excel only supports dates from January 1, 1900 to December 31, 9999.
Why they decided to let dates go almost 8000 years into the future, but only 108 years into the past is beyond me.
Formatting as a long date as the other user says won't work. It will display, but won't act like a date, so you can't add numbers to it or compare it to other dates.
But you can write the date as numbers and split the date into 3 cells and sort those though. so you would have a year column, a month column, and a day column.
Format the cells as date, choose long date as style eg 3/6/1876, or 3 June 1876
