i know you are all thinking, oh no another Dr. Dre Beats question. but its not really, its headphones in general. i am no audiophile, so i don't really know that much about this. but i am wanting to get my boyfriend some good headphones for Christmas, he has had several cheap over-ear pair's and finds that in a matter of weeks one side will go out and eventually both, so i want to find a good pair with quality sound.
the thing is he's always wanted a pair of beats, but most research I've found has turned up mixed reviews a lot of them bad, and if they're really that bad, then i don't see paying that much for them.
in short, he likes good quality things, but sometimes he can be a bit of a snob and rather just have something big name. i was wondering if someone could direct me to some good headphones with good sound quality, especially a good bass, that are worth the price.
p.s. i know its july, but i hate christmas shopping, i always plan ahead
Update:since tends to be a snob every so often and likes the over-hyped things (hence the Beats), i want to show him he's wrong about the name meaning its better.
and thanks for all the help so far, its some great information!

First of all, don't buy Beats by Dre. Those reviews you see on the internet are correct, they are overpriced and they suck.
I would recommend a pair of Sennheisers. They have a great collection. I have 2 over ear Sennheiser headphones (HD 201 which was my first, and the HD 428 which is my current) and they sound great. Better than Beats, I'm not joking. I have a friend who owns a pair of Beats by Dre Studios, and when we compared my HD 428 to his Beats Studios, he was disappointed in the sound quality of the Beats compared to my HD 428s. He even regretted that he bought his pair of Beats Studios at $269 - $299, compared to my HD 428 which I bought at $99.99.
There are many brands out there that are better than Beats. AKG, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Bose. These are just some of them. Meanwhile, Beats, Skullcandy, Soul by Ludacris, etc, are just fashion accessories. They don't sound as good as they look.
If you want something cheap, but has VERY HIGH QUALITY, buy Sennheisers. They have a great collection of over ear headphones, earphones. And some are below $200. Would you rather buy a $250+ Beats headphone, which has bad quality, than a $200 below Sennheiser, which has GREAT quality?
TL;DR Sennheiser is cheap and has great quality, don't buy Beats because they suck at quality, and are overpriced.
I don't know what model of Monster Beats you are looking for, but i bought from this site before.
