I have to write an essay on Paradise Lost by John Milton. the question says to prove that Satan is a heroic figure in the excerpt from book one. I dont understand how satan could possibly be a hero if he is evil.
a little help here?
Update:is the Paradise Lost underlined or put in quotes?

The terms "heroic figure" and "good guy" are not synonymous. You need to explain how Satan has the characteristics of a hero, some of the same qualities a hero would have. Keep in mind that even the traditional figures we think of as heroes also had their flaws.
Hmmm ... underlined or quotes. I think I would underline it, but I don't think it would be wrong to use quotes either.

Pay less attention to your own preconceptions ("satan is evil") and more to the diction or imagery used to describe Satan, his actions, etc.
Webster calls a hero "the central male character" in a work. Hero is not synonymous with good.
It is difficult to answer since you did not include the excerpt. Remember, however, that a heroic figure need not be a good guy.
