Good morning. My wife and I are recently retired and want to start taking advantage of our free time! We both love to travel but haven't planned anything ourselves in a while--friends or family always make the plans and we tag along! As a result, I'm not too familiar with booking travel online. I see commercials and have talked to some friends, but no one can seem to explain to me the difference between hotel comparison websites and straight out booking sites. I'm not sure which one is better to use. Any clarification and recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks so much.

Ditto Lucy's answer. She did a great job of summing up the idea of a comparison site. I've done my fair share of booking straight through the hotel, booking through a 3rd party site, and using a comparison site. I would say that the latter option is my favorite since it does the work for me! Sorry, I'm a busy lady! I've used some of the bigger sites like kayak and booking, and I've also used prontohotel. They're all along the same lines, but, like Lucy also said, prontohotel has nice filters. I'm known to just choose a destination at random and then have no idea where to stay as far as area goes. I find that prontohotel makes it easier to narrow my options down since I can search by landmark or neighborhood. They also have city guides to give you some basic info about the city you're visiting. I've never had a problem with them. Good luck and happy travels!
Hotel Comparison Websites
Hi Gene! I'm in a similar situation and have started traveling as much as possible with my wife. We visit our family a lot, so we don't always have to book a hotel. But we also like to explore new places. I was also pretty clueless about booking online and had the same questions about comparison sites vs booking sites. My kids told me that I wouldn't have anything to worry about with comparison sites and even told me that I'd probably like it better. And they were right! I have every confidence that you will too. I have used the above-mentioned prontohotel.com and find it very straightforward--probably the most so out of all of the sites I've tried (I've tried all of the biggies). Give it a go!
Hi there! Happy retirement! It's so nice that you and your wife can get out there and enjoy traveling, life, and each other! I book all of my travel online, so I think I can offer a little insight. Hotel comparison websites take all of the different hotel rates you'll find on big booking sites across the web (like expedia, orbitz, hotels.com, etc) and will put them all on one page for you so that you can compare the rates and site offerings all in one spot without having to check each one individually. Most of the time, you don't book directly through these comparison sites--they'll redirect you to another booking site. Booking sites, like the ones mentioned above, tap into the systems of individual hotels and bring you their rates and availability. While you can't go wrong either way, I have found that comparison sites make life a little easier as they eliminate your need to go back and forth between booking sites and keep track of the prices you find on site A, site B, site C, etc. I use hotel comparison sites all of the time, so I wouldn't worry about running into any problems. I tend to use www.prontohotel.com because I like its filter features, but there are plenty of others out there. You'll also find that there are comparison sites for airfare, car rentals, etc, if you're in need of those as well. Hope this helped!
