My brother's laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000 with windows vista 32-bit) messed up yesterday and now the log in screen is fine but once he actually logs in it goes to a screen with red and pink horizontal lines and flashes. Before it happened he was playing a game then the game froze and it said his display driver failed. He ran a virus scan and it found nothing but i don't always trust his virus scan (AVG) to find everything. I tried to update the driver but it did nothing. I figure it is a software error or a virus but I wanted to see if anyone else knows what it is before we send it to a professional.

Actually, he may be having hardware trouble. Try coming up in Safe Mode. If it works, do this:
1. Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize.
2. Click Display Settings.
3. Carefully tweak the Resolution and Color settings, one at a time, save them, and try booting normally.
To get into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking:
1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3. Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.
4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.
5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.
6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.
Good luck.
I am thinking it's something wrong with the video card. AVG is a pretty dependable anti virus so i wouldn't think that it's a virus. Also a slight chance of not having enough ram. It could've just burned up from running it too hard with the game. It would help us if you posted the specs as well.
Try updating your graphic driver and adjust your screen resolution.
