Okay, so you dont mention the version or anything and go right on with the question. Well anyway, there can be several problems I will give you their solutions on by on, try them all....
#1. You might be trying to play a DVD on a CD rom drive!
Sol. Dont do it, A CD rom drive cant play a DVD!!
#2. The CD might be corrupt
Sol. Check that the cd works on another computer, it is working then its your drive thats having a problem...move on to no. 3
#3. Go to my computer, right click, choose properties, select the hardware tab, click on 'Device Manager'. There you will see a list of all the devices installed or connected to your PC/Laptop (You didnt mention what it was).
On the list find 'DVD/Cd Rom drives' click on the + next to it and double click on the drives name. See that the device is working properly and that the device usage is enabled. If it doesnt work then that means your drive is corrupted and you will need to get your DVD/CD drive changed.
#5 For laptop: If you have a laptop with a snap-on optical drive then do the above steps, they dont work then try this. See first that your cd drives shows up in the my computer if not then remove your drive(refer manual for that) and reinsert it after cleaning the pins with a soft cloth, if it doesnt show still then, In the device manager right click on the top most icon
(A PC) and select 'Scan for device changes'. Then your dvd/cd rom should be displayed and should work. If not then it needs to be changed.
Could be that the CD volume is not at the max. If you go to control panel and sounds you will find the setting in there. Each part of sound e.g., Midi, CD, and so on has its own settings so check that the volume it not set at minimum or the Cd could be muted.
