I have always wanted an Australian Shepherd, but in New England they are so expensive, around here i think they are $500+ even for a pet, how much is it near you?
i know out west they are cheaper because they are used on ranches and as pets more
Update:Barbara...i am ready for a dog, i have three at my house already, two are rescues, anyway, im not getting a puppy because i am too busy for one at the moment, its just that ive alway wanted a aussie and i wanted to know where the cheapest one would be, i know dogs are worth any amount of money in the end, but i would rather find somewhere that is cheaper, a friend in utah said they are $150 around her, so i would rather get one at that price instead of one around me for $500, people read into questions to much!! all i want in aussie puppy prices!!

I work for the united Australian Shepherd rescue. we take in thousands of wonderful dog how where abbandoned or not taken care of many of our dogs our puppies we have low fees about 200.00 depending on the dog. My advice is australians are very sweet and active make sure you have the time to devote for puppy training. If you would like a best friend from the start older shepherds are trainned and devoted.
I just bought one - He was 8 1/2 weeks when he came home...He was $700 and comes from Working lines (Though he does have a few champions and 1 international champion in his lines).
I've had several Aussies over the years - The first one I got 20+ years ago was $400 and prices have gradually increased over the years (3 years ago I paid $750 for a retired Champion - He unfortunately got out of my yard in March and was hit by a train : ( )
The truth is, as far as any dogs go, $500 is probably too little to pay for a dog. First of all know your breed. I don't know Austrialian Shepherds, but I do know German Shepherds. A well bred German Shepherd puppy will come from a bloodline of Schutzhund champions. They will run any where from $1,000 to $2,500. And that is a good price. If you get one from Germany, then you can pay up to $5,000 just for a puppy, and that is what they consider their left over crap.
OK so you want a pure-bred puppy (of any breed) but you don't want to pay the $500 price - and it has to be a puppy - not an adult dog - which may be available through a breed rescue.
And then you get angry at someone trying to point out that buying the dog is the cheapest part of owning one?
Honestly, I don't think you're ready for a dog just yet.
for an example, I live in Michigan, we paid $600.00 for our labrador retirver, and WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!At first it seemed like alot, but it was totoally worth it. Alot of times it all depends on the pedigree of the dog and how good his family genes are. But now we have spent a close $3000.00 not including the puppy and we have only had her a year. She had some medical issues so you must think of that--anything can come up. Plus food--30 a bag, last about a month, was on $60.00 food for about 6mths of that time, toys, regular vet visits and checkups, frontine meds, heartworms meds you name it.--It really will add up...But nothing compares to the love you rdog will give you!!
About $800 for a well bred dog in Michigan
Look at a rescue there are always lots of dogs all types and ages available.
Okay I read your post and I know my neighbour has an Aussie Shepherd so I called her and asked her what she paid for Zoe. She paid $900CDN. That's about $885US the way the exchange rate is right now.
$500 is very cheap for a well bred dog I would have thought, but you know it varies by area.
You can save the life of a dog by adopting one from a humane society.
The web site petfinders.com has dogs by breed and region. They now have in excess of 500 Australian Shepherds and Australian Shepherd mixes.
Take a look.
They are about the same price out west here. Have you looked into the breed rescue programs??
