Java runs on a virtual machine, meaning it can only execute scripts < 32Mbs. I prefer .NETs.
I am a VB.Net programmer because it's a powerful and easy OOP language, i'll be moving onto C++ when I get around to programming games though.
Depends what you want, systems/network analysis make quite easy jobs comparitively. But programmers get paid alot more.
Learn Ruby on Rails. It is the future. And many companies need ruby programmers and even more will want you in the future. I was told this by an 80 year old computer IT.
