This theme provides 'Appearance' settings for a background image, so you don't need to edit the HTML.
Tumblr wants you to upload background images into Tumblr, so start by downloading that image to your computer so that you'll be able to upload it in the next step. (You can get around this, but only by editing the theme's HTML.) Then go to your blog's Customize page, and instead of trying to edit the HTML just scroll down in the 'Appearance' section until you find an item that says 'SiteBGImage' and has an 'Upload' button next to it. Click that 'Upload' button and use the resulting browser dialogue to upload your desired image. Then scroll down a little further until you find an item that says 'SiteBGImage' and has a checkbox next to it. Make sure that that checkbox is turned on. Then 'Save' these changes, and that should be all you need to do.
