P45 is the one on two of my motherboards, one running a Q9550 and the other running a Q9400 CPU Quad. For both these processors, the P45 is required.

It's the I/O (input/output) controller hub, also known as a southbridge. It's responsible for controlling power management, the PCI/PCIe bus, audio devices, sata/ide/usb/lan, and other devices.
