It used to be cool for women to be rockers, now it's not. Shakira was a rocker (at least rock/pop), now she's more pop oriented. Same with Jewel, and then she even transitioned to country. You don't see a lot of Morissette, but I think she kind of represented the rock chic coolness of the time. I personally preferred both Jewel and Shakira when they were doing their styles of rock (Jewel more folky and Shakira with pop influence).
@Miguel: You obviously know nothing of Shakira's early career. She has written about many social issues in her songs and has a pretty amazing voice and vocal control in general. I have talked to people who actually study vocal techniques and they say she's awesome. Just because you don't like the way her voice sounds doesn't mean she sings poorly. I've tried to sing some of her early Spanish songs and many are quite difficult.
I don't think Jewel and Shakira are similar at all, they as different as Janis Joplin and Britney Spears.
Jewel is country/folk, and Shakira is pop. Jewel has one of the greatest voices of all times and Shakira doesn't sound so good. Jewel have very deep meaningful intimate lyrics that she wrote herself, Shakira sings songs that are fun but nothing more, she doesn't write from her heart like Jewel and her songs could be sang by anyone. Jewel is an amazing talented guitar player, Shakira is not.

Tina: I know everything about Shakira's early career cos I'm latin american and I've been listening to her songs and watching her videos since her first album when she was a brunette and she was singing "Moscas en la casa", "Pies descalzos", "Inevitable" and all those songs.
Every serious vocal coach will tell you her vocal techniques are not that good. She swallows her voice and sings from her throat, which is not the right way to sing. In her early days she was against blond-plastic-doll popstars, which is exactly what she is now.
Shakira 1995
gerbil, in my view, it should be Alanis Morrisette. She receives creepier each and every time I see her. once the recycling of fabrics begins, which incorporates acoustic variations of songs that already sucked, there's no turning back.
