So currently i am debating rather or not i should get a AMD or Intel
1. AMD A8 QuadCore 1.5/2.4 ghz
2. Intel i5 2.4 ghz with boost it can go 3.0 ghz (Believe its dual core)
Lets not talk about price but just functions which one would be a better choice? I am a student, not planning on doing high tech stuff but i want a cpu that i would look back in couple years and wouldnt regret buying.

the first few answers tell you nothing, it boils down to several factors, price wise obviously the a8 is better. as far as function the a8 is better for just about everything, first, the a8 has two dedicated graphics cards. that means the graphics and processor work independently. it would cost alot more for an i5 with two graphics cards. second the a8 has energy efficiencies that the i5 doesnt, both have turbo boost technology, but the a8 has lower speeds. that saves on battery life and heat stress, which is a huge issue. if you have a quad core you will not have to worry about being faster then 2.4 ghz for at least 5 or 6 years(which the a8 is quad core while the i5 is a dual core), The a8 was just released a few months ago,it is newer technology and for the most part superior to intel. I would recommend the a8 over the i5, in fact just about every AMD beats the equivalent intel processor now that the new processors AMD released have dedicated graphics on them. The only thing AMD cant compete with is an i7, but very few people likes engineers and architects need them alof of people waste their money buying it while it is an energy hog and creates alot of heat stress. I recently bought an amd a6, which is a step below the a8 and is a quad core processor with dedicated graphics. i am very happy with it and if you like I can help you find a good deal on one with that processor, feel free to contact me if you would like the help. otherwise, i hope this has helped you decide.
For a certain amount of money you'll get a faster processor with AMD but the best Intel processors decimate the best AMD ones.
Passmark Scores for AMD's and Intel's best:
Intel Core i7-3960X - score 15097
AMD FX-8150 - score 8326
As you can see from the chart via the link below Intel dominate the high end CPU charts, the top 23 processors are all Intel.

AMD have better frequency and 4 cores... but I love intels... definitely choose AMD
AMD in your case but the intel i7 is the best
INTEL by far!
ALL software application examine the processor structures and are based off of INTEL !
You can't go wrong when you go with what the others are using as their example !
AMD definitely. It gives you more GHz
1. 4 (quad core) x 2.4 = 9.6 GHz
2. 2 (dual core) x 3.0 = 6.0 GHz
