Beyond that there are numerous positions within the aeronautical field that prefer a mechanical engineer. Aerospace structural engineers are primarily mechanical engineers and there are numerous mechanical systems on every aircraft.
The FAA has programs for oversight of aircraft repairs and modifications DER (designated engineering representative) and DAR (designated airworthiness representative) these are both lucrative fields that being a mechanical engineer would carry some weight along with additional training.
