i was reading my biology textbook and it said the centrioles' function in the animal cell was unknown. in my previous biology class i beleive i was taught that they separate chromosomes during cell division. is their function unkown or am i just remembering wrong?

They are only found in animal cell, therefore they have functions there.
Functions:
1. They serve as an organizing center for microtubules.
2. They play a notable rule in cell division
absence of centrioles in animal cells is associated with an iincreased divisional errors.
3. They evolved as a refinement of the cell, making mitosis a much more efficient and less error-prone process
The exact function is unknown to be honest, but it is believed (at least it's what I was taught) that centrioles have a role in cell division. They're the ones that organize the mitotic spindle apparatus in prep for cell division. It's also where the microtubules are organized for cell division as well (it's known as an MTOC: microtubule organization centre).
Centriole is involved in the mitotic phase of the cell cycle. Micro tubules ( spindle fibres) are associated with the Centrale help to separate chromatids during cell division. But plant cells don't have centrioles.
DEAR WEST,, WHAT YOU HAVE READ & WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT,, BOTH ARE IN DIFFERENT WAYS ...................... ACTUALLY NOBODY HAS EVER SEEN SEPARATION OF CHROMOSOMES ,, WHAT IS SEEN IS THE RESULT OF THE PROCESS.... THIS WHOLE PROCESS IS BY STAINING CENTRIOLE & CHROMOSOMES WITH DIFF. COLOUR ...ACC.. TO VARIOUS OBSERVATIONS THIS HAS BEEN ALLOTED TO CENTRIOLES.............
