When looking for a computer, you want to know what you need or want first. Desktop (stationary, more powerful, cheaper) or Laptop (portable, more expensive) ? Will you be playing games, watching movies, listening to music, word processing, internet browsing, etc.? If you do not plan on playing games or watching videos on your computer, the cheapest system currently on the market is more than enough for you. 2.40GHz represents the frequency of the processor, sometimes known as clock speed. The processor is the internal computing system which processes everything you ask the computer to do. The more GHz, the better. Also, Dual Core is better than a Single Core, and Quad Core is better than Dual Core. A dual core, or quad core simply has more than one processor, therefore it can process multiple tasks at one time.
Important things to look for:
RAM - Random Access Memory -
Listed in GB (Gigabytes) - This is the working memory. The more the better. Try not to get any less than 2 GB, especially is the computer is running Microsoft Vista.
HDD - Hard Disk Drive -
Also listed in GB. This is not very important, unless you plan to store a lot of music of videos. Anything more than 100GB is plenty. Most desktops come with at least 200GB, while most laptops come with at least 120GB.
First you have to consider what you will be using it for, if it is a gaming computer you will want to get a Dual core processor "2.0 GHZ or better" and a solid graphics card. Also at least 3 gigs of ram for vista and 2 for Win Xp.
If it is an office computer you should be fine with a 1.6 Ghz processor and an integrated video card.
