I am very well experienced on computers and rarely have a problem I can;t fix, but I have one now.
At times, my laptop would freeze and the scree would o funny, usually with lines going across it or the screen would go mostly white with a big black bar in the center of it (Vertical bar). I have to shake it and smack it to get it back to normal. It's been only doing this for the past few months.
I noticed especially if it's in certain position, like an angle, it does t more. Almost every time I turn it on, the screen is white with the big black vertical bar on the center. But I pick up the laptop or give it a gentle shake it goes away.
I have taken the laptop apart and couldn't find anthing wrong with it. I've never had this problem with computer before. I'm starting to think a faulty video card.
This laptop isn't that old, I ha bought it in February, 2007. it's an Acer Aspire 3680.

Does not sound like the card to me because your shaking to clear the problem. I'd check the small ribbon connector from the board to the monitor itself, I'd look there first from what your describing here.
I have no idea! You may need to go out to buy a new laptop if it carrys on. Or you could just put up with it and keep on shaking it when you turn it on.
