I've had a Dell Inspiron E1405 for about 6 years now and had to replace the screen. It works perfect except for when I have to restart the laptop. It turns white with black lines and slowly fades to black. I have to hold down the power to shut it off then turn it back on to get it to come back. Anybody have any ideas as to what causes this and a way to fix it? I am using Windows XP.

Hi Andy,
I am Kaveri from the Dell Social Media Outreach team.
We first need to isolate the problem, whether it is a LCD or video card issue.
First try and run the diagnostics test on LCD. Please find the following steps to run the test.
1. Switch off the system
2. Press D and power simultaneously to start the system
3. You will see different colors on the screen
If you are getting same lines on the LCD while running that test, it clears out that LCD is faulty and you need to replace it.
Otherwise connect external monitor and check whether you are getting lines on that monitor or not. In case you are getting lines on external screen that means Motherboard is faulty.
In case everything is fine , try and install video driver from the support website. Please find below link to install the driver.
Link:- http://dell.to/ZIHbA3
1) Enter the Service Tag and press submit button. ( You can find the service tag at the bottom of the laptop on white sticker, it’s a seven digit alphanumeric code which ends with BS or number 1.)
2) Click on Drivers and Downloads.
3) Choose the Operating system.
4) Click on Video driver option and download the drivers

That is interesting. There is a power inverter usually located below the bottom of the screen itself which can cause problems. I would investigate that because they are separate from a screen repair and can cause issue. Check out this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/62706-35-dell-in...
